I've been lucky enough to spend some time with my parents new Samsung LE46M51BX, and as I promised a few people I'd post some thoughts, here is a mini-review.

HUGE

The Samsung LE46M51BX is HUGE! As far as I know, at present, it's the largest LCD TV you can buy! Thankfully, the fantastic styling of the Samsung LE46M51BX enhances the space it occupies - looking equally good in a modern or traditionally styled room.

It measures approx 44 inches wide.

First Impressions

Ok... I must confess that I was worried my parents would be disappointed with the picture. Why? because their old TV was a 6 year old Sony 28 CRT, so basically going from a TV that's so small it hides the crapness of SD to a huge, crisp, lcd capable of showing all the nooks and crannies you don't really want to see (lack of HD content to blame not the TV!).

Switched on the TV and... well, I was pleasantly surprised! The Samsung LE46M51BX's internal processing does a fantastic job of handling SD, and via analogue signal too! The picture was more than acceptable, so thumbs up on that count. The auto set up is also very good - it tunes in all your stations and sorts them in order. Nice. The remote control is easy to use and navigating through the menu system is also easy.

DVD

As I always say whenever I talk about LCD TVs and DVD, is that you'll only get out what you put in, meaning if your source is crap, your picture will be too. With this in mind I took down my pretty inexpensive but good quality Toshiba 150e DVD player (about ?0 online) plus my high quality component leads from Richer Sounds.

The quality was great - just like my Samsung LE32r41BX... but bigger! Much bigger! Although in fairness the Samsung LE46M51BX has better contrast and colour (it's a newer model so the improvements are expected). I only tested a handful of DVDs mind, Return of the King, Invincibles, Austin Powers to name a few. All looked fantastic, good bye cinema... hello Samsung LE46M51BX. All in all if you have a quality DVD player and connects, the Samsung LE46M51BX won't disappoint, the picture quality is very good, especially bearing in mind the size of the set. Please note that DVD is still SD, so badly produced DVD's will be highlighted- this isn't the fault of the TV or indeed any High Definition TV set... their only crime is they show you detail. You can compensate for bad dvds though by adjusting the settings. Thankfully the Samsung LE46M51BX is very tweakable - you'll be there for hours just playing with the menu adjustments!

SKY

Sky was also great, just make sure it's connected to Scart one as that's RGB, and that RGB is selected as the output in your sky settings. My parents have also ordered SKY HD, so I'll write a follow up when they get it... August I think (feel free to remind me if I forget!). As they watch sky most, I'm glad to report it looked good.
